Billie Joe was born to Andy Armstrong, a jazz musician and part time truck driver for Safeway and Ollie Armstrong, a waitress of local restaurant Rod's Hickory Pit. Many people seem to think Billie's real name is William Joseph Armstrong, this is untrue. Billie's mother made a mistake while writing his birth certificate due to being high on the drugs given for birth. Billie started singing when he was five, he used to visit hospitals and sing to the patients to make them feel better. This eventually got him in the studio and he recorded his first song 'Look For Love'.

Billie met Mike Pritchard in the school cafeteria when he was ten years old. They used to sleep over at each others houses and play metal songs and the two became extremely good friends. Tragedy struck the Armstrong when Billie's father, Andy, passed away in 1982 due to esophagus cancer which had spread through his body, this led to Billie and Mike becoming even better friends as Billie dealt with his father's death. Billie received his first guitar when he was eleven, which he named Blue. To this day, Billie still uses Blue and he also has many replicas made. When Billie was twelve, his mother remarried to a man which Billie and his siblings hated. It was from this that Billie wrote his first song titled - 'Why Do You Want Him?'.

When Billie was fifteen, 'Sweet Children' was formed. The band consisted of Billie on guitar and vocals, Mike on bass and vocals and an older punk friend of theirs named John on drums. They played their first gig at Rod's Hickory Pit where Billie's mother worked. In 1989, Sweet Children changed their name to 'Green Day'.

On February 16 1990, the day before his eighteenth birthday, Billie dropped out of high school, halfway through his senior year to devote all of his time to the band and shortly after this drummer John forced the band to hiatus while he attended college. Not wanting to hiatus, Billie and Mike got drummer Tre Cool to play on the gigs that John couldn't. Eventually, they decided to fire John as it wasn't fair on Tre and Tre became their new full-time drummer. This would eventually more than pay off as Tre's dad agreed to transport the band around the US on their first tour, where Billie would meet his wife, Adrienne. They began dating and later married on July 02, 1994 in a five minute ceremony. A picture of Billie and Adrienne on their wedding day can be found over on here. The day after the wedding, on July 03 1994, Adrienne found out she was pregnant. Billie's first son was born in March 1995 named Joseph Marciano. Adrienne fell pregnant again and Jakob Danger was born in September 1998.
